A desire path is a path created by usage, not a pre-determined path.
– Gaston Bachelard, from his book “The Poetics of Space,”
Desire paths as stated by Bachelard in his novel ‘poetics of space’ are paths that are created connecting point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ by the shortest distance. However these are found around all walks of life sometimes these desire paths seem to take the adventurer off the beaten path. However if they truly do take you the shortest distance between ‘A’ and ‘B’ then they do not always take you to places new. So when exploring urban environments these desire paths tempt us with alternative routes and allow us to choose.. I guess in a way giving up our own trust in the safety of concrete or asphalt to hand over our direction to the locals and those in the know. We may not be in a desert or forest but within the urban sprawl trusting the desire paths is to trust the local residents in that they know the best path to take.
